Ghana University Partners With Desert Research Institute

Representatives from a university in Ghana are visiting the Desert Research Institute this week to discuss collaborating on how to conserve water.

The representatives from the University for Development Studies in Northern Ghana discussed how to address the need for water in West Africa.

One of the professors from Ghana says the climates of both his country and Western Nevada are similar.

"In Ghana, if you'll see the vegetation it looks like we are so close to the desert. I can around here in Nevada what I see around is similar to things you find around desert areas. So, in that regard I think we have a whole lot of things in common,” says professor Haruna Yakubu.

The DRI and University in Ghana renewed an agreement to build a center to study water sanitation and hygiene.

DRI's president says access to clean water can transform people's lives in Ghana.

"I saw a woman who was able to take that water and produce cabbage that she sold to local restaurants. Through the sales of the cabbage she was able to put her son through college, and then change the whole chemistry of her family by having him educated,” says Dr. Stephen G. Wells.

The DRI will also soon participate in a student exchange with the University in Ghana.
