Lakeridge Swim Team Sunk By Tennis Club Demolition Plans

"It's going to be a hot mess. It's going to be a scramble to find places for pool time right now. The few pools we have in Reno right now in 2020 barely fit us as it is," said Lakeridge Swim Team Head Coach Sharon Weiss. More than one hundred kids who are on the Lakeridge Swim Team don't know where they'll be swimming going forward. Reno Land Inc. says its going to demolish the Lakeridge Tennis Club where the team's been swimming for the last 30 years.

"This is a team that spends a tremendous amount of their childhood together. The stories are endless. We have repeated stories of kids coming back from illness and kids coming back from injury," said Weiss.

She says the loss of the club's inside and outside pools will create a wave of issues for the entire community. "One of the leading causes of accidental child death every year is drowning. This particular community is really short of pools and we cannot afford to lose 2 more at this time," said Weiss.

Swimming is about a lot more than just exercise. "Kids who learn about swimming, day one they learn about health, nutrition, balance, time management, and goal setting," said Weiss.

It changes them as a person. "A grouchy kid who's having a bad horrible day, have them swim for an hour.and you have a transformed human being," said Weiss.

The coach says the team is hoping to stop the planned demolition. but even if they don't they'll keep swimming along. "Whether we have to swim in Boca, Lake Tahoe, the Northwest Pool, Idlewild or wherever else that will have us, we'll be there," said Weiss.

A final decision letter for the property is expected on May 13, 2020.
