Man Charged With Murder After Times Square Crash

A man accused of mowing down a crowd of Times Square pedestrians with his car, killing one of them, made his first appearance in court on Friday.

26-year-old Richard Rojas has been charged with murder, 20 counts of attempted murder and five counts of aggravated vehicular homicide.

Manhattan prosecutors said in court that Rojas told police after his arrest that he wanted to "kill them all."

They said he also told police they should have shot him.

Rojas's lawyer and weeping supporters had no comment Friday.

Police say he drove his car for three blocks into Times Square midday Thursday, hitting nearly two dozen people before steel security barriers finally stopped him.

An 18-year-old tourist from Michigan was killed. Her 13-year-old sister was among the 22 injured.

A police report says Rojas once told police in Florida he wanted to kill officers.

Rojas enlisted in the Navy in 2011. In 2012, he was accused of beating a cab driver in Jacksonville, Florida, at a naval station.

According to the arrest report, Rojas said the cabbie had disrespected him by trying to charge too much.

The report says Rojas told an officer he was going to kill all police and military police he might see after his release from jail.

The U.S. military took over the case.

A Navy official says records show he was discharged in 2014 as the result of a special court martial.
