Junior Daisha Jones-Oglesby's header in the 68th minute gave the Nevada soccer team a 1-0 win over UC Davis Friday evening in the team's non-conference finale.
The Wolf Pack will enter Mountain West play next weekend with a 3-5-1 overall record thanks to Friday's victory over the Aggies (3-6-0).
“This win is a big confidence builder, coming off of a rough weekend last weekend,” head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. “Being here at home at Mackay Stadium, we love our fans, we love the people that come out and support us so getting that win before we go on the road and open conference play in the Mountain West I think is huge for our confidence. You could see that after the game there were a lot of smiles, a lot of energy and excitement, so it was great to get the win tonight.”
Nevada controlled possession and kept the ball in the UC Davis end for most of the 90 minutes, but was not able to break through until the second half. Freshman, and the team's leader in points, Angel Meriwether registered her first collegiate assist when she tucked in a pass to Jones-Oglesby with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game. Jones-Oglesby then headed in the second goal of her career past the Aggies goalkeeper Taylor Jern, which proved to be the game-winner.
Within the final seven minutes of regulation, the Wolf Pack had four fouls called against them which set up free kick opportunities for the Aggies in the Nevada end and a chance to tie things up. With under 30 seconds left on the clock, UC Davis' Rachel Smith nearly sent the game into overtime with a header shot that sailed just high above the crossbar.
Despite the 24 total shots that were put up during the game between both sides, neither goalkeeper was tested much in net. Jern made just one save in the match, while her counterpart and Nevada starter Devyn Bryar stopped two shots to earn her second shutout of the season.
Nevada travels to Laramie, Wyo. next Friday to open league action against Wyoming at 2 p.m. PT.
