New flashing yield signs are going up along I-580, trying to prevent crashes.
Some on-ramps in Nevada have traffic merging from both directions to get on to area freeways.
The flashing yield signs are another way to remind drivers of what lies ahead.
"And these enhance the existing yield signs just as another visual cue for drivers to yield to traffic that might be oncoming from the left side trying to access the same interstate ramp,” says Meg Ragonese from NDOT.
Usually when you get on an on-ramp, the lane you're in is the only one entering the freeway...but in some cases, two lanes merge onto the same ramp.
"You know, what we see is that for particularly this kind of yield movement, we see that it can be difficult particularly for older drivers."
The new flashing yield signs are designed to decrease crashes on our freeway on-ramps.
They are the first four in the state to go into operation.
And many more are on the way. To keep you safer.
