New Racetrack in Reno Fuels the Business of Remote Control Cars

It's a blustery day. A few clouds drift overhead and Oshea Sanders is choosing to spend his day off....at work. Because it's a blast! Sanders works at the CKRC Racetrack and Hobby store on Mill Street in Reno. And he's hooked.

"This is great, you can try all kinds of things and if you wreck the car you can still drive to work," he says. "I work here but this is where I like to spend my days off too!"

Oshea is one in a growing number of remote control enthusiasts in northern Nevada. And now that the new race track is ready that business is expected to boom. They have three tracks: one for speed racing, one for rock climbing and one for what they call crawling.

And there were drivers with their cars at all three today.

"This is more than just bringing your car," said Jason Copeland who owns CKRC Hobbies. "This is a hobby, they buy cars, they fix cars and they make them better and nicer and they meet others who appreciate that."

Remote control cars are having a big comeback according to Copeland.

"It has gone through lean times and good times. It's pretty popular right now, right up there with drones," Copeland says.

Copeland says it costs about $300 to get started but you can spend a lot more than that. They'll be holding a Grand Opening this Saturday where you can try your hand at it for as little as $5. But they do feel that once you give a whirl you'll be hooked!Â
