CHP crash on SR-89 involving a quad

One man is dead after he was thrown from his quad in a crash on Friday.

A crash with a body in a ditch was reported to the South Lake Tahoe CHP office at 03:25 a.m. on March 21.

According to CHP a Caltrans employee was on SR-89 checking for rock landslides when they made the 911 call.

They say the Caltrans worker saw what he believed to be a blood stain and a beer can in the road.

When the Caltrans worker turned to look around, he saw a white man lying in a ditch.

CHP was informed on the way to the area that the Alpine County Sheriff and Fire Department had arrived and pronounced the 28-year-old man from Alpine County dead on the scene.

Additionally, they reported that a green Honda quad was over the embankment.

Troopers says once on scene they found evidence indicating the party was riding the quad southbound on SR-89 north of SR-4 and making an unsafe turning action. As a result, the rider was thrown from the quad and landed on the road.

The quad proceeded southwest over a dirt embankment and down a hill for about 500 feet before coming to rest on the bank of the Carson River.

Troopers say physical evidence suggests that no helmet was being worn at the time of the crash, and none was found at the scene, and there was no proof that the party was hit by another car either before or after the crash.

No witnesses were present on the scene and troopers believe that alcohol played a role in this crash.
