Firefighters in Inyo County are fighting a wildfire that is presently endangering watersheds, endangered species habitats, vital infrastructure, cultural and heritage sites, and a number of dangerous structures.

The wildfire, which started around 2:11 p.m. on Sunday, north of Bishop at Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road, has quickly grown to a size of about 1,250 acres with zero containment as of Monday morning.

The rapid spread of the fire led to evacuation orders for a number of areas, including the White Mountain Estates community, Chalfant in Mono County, and Laws in Inyo County.

CAL Fire says in an online post, to protect the people, CAL Fire San Bernardino/Inyo/Mono formed a 30-mile stretch of evacuations to ensure public safety.

They say overnight, the fire activity increased, with notable runs propelled by wind and the orientation of the ground.

Resources on the ground and in the air have been greatly expanded to aid with suppression operations.
