A portion of I-80 west has reopened after being shut down for days due to the Floriston Fire.

It's burned 640 acres and is 8% contained, after starting around 10 a.m. on Wednesday northeast of Truckee.

Firefighters are working to strengthen containment lines and limit the fire's spread.

A virtual community meeting was hosted on the Cal Fire Nevada-Yuba-Placer Facebook page on Thursday to provide updates and information about the fire. The meeting can be watched at the Facebook page at this link.

Jeremy Linder with Caltrans said at the meeting that they're working to reopen Interstate 80 and will only do so when it is safe.

Currently crews are working to get concrete barriers to line sections of the interstate to prevent hot rocks and debris from falling onto the roadway. 

People are advised not to use Dog Valley Road as a detour, as it is closed as well.

CAL FIRE says it will be using the Castle Peak parking lots at the entrance to Northstar as their Incident Command Post (ICP) for the fire. Do not enter or park in these lots while they are being used for the incident.

At this time, there is no threat to the Northstar area. 

According to CAL FIRE, the fire is threatening I-80, the Truckee watershed, and nearby natural resources. Additional air and ground resources have been requested.

NV Energy is reporting 131 customers without power due to the fire. There is no estimated time for power to be restored to those customers.

Grand Sierra Resort is offering evacuees and fire crews a special $59 room rate with resort fees waived, along with complimentary RV and trailer parking for those displaced by evacuations.

The special hotel rate is available Wednesday and Thursday nights, based on availability. Limited room availability is expected over the weekend due to previously booked business. Evacuees and fire crews can check current availability at GrandSierraResort.com/Evacuee or call the resort at 775-789-2000 and mention the code “EVACUEE.”

Potential power impacts 

Tahoe Donner Public Utility Districts says they are monitoring the fire and its potential impact power service in the Truckee area.

While the fire is not currently threatening Truckee, it has the potential to threaten the NV Energy transmission lines that deliver power from Verdi.

If NV Energy opts for an emergency de-energization of the transmission line, all TDPUD customers would lose power without advance notice.

The utility recommends customers take precautions to prepare for the possibility of an outage. 

Air Quality

Northern Nevada Public Health has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the Reno-Sparks area due to smoke from regional wildfires, including the Floriston and Dome fires, until further notice.

As of 5 p.m. on September 16, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) range, with an AQI of 109 in the Verdi area. The AQI in the Reno/Sparks area is in the moderate or good range (Learn more about AQI Ranges).

AQI in Eastern Sparks and Spanish Springs may reach the Moderate to USG range this afternoon and into Thursday morning due to the Dome Fire, based on air quality models and sensors.
