One of two the Mammoth Mountain ski patrollers caught in an avalanche earlier this month has died of her injuries.

Claire Murphy died in hospital on February 22nd.

ORIGINAL STORY: 

Two Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol staff were caught in an avalanche on Lincoln Mountain on Friday morning.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. during avalanche mitigation work according to a release from the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.

The first patroller was found uninjured while the second patroller was taken to Mammoth Hospital with serious injuries and then flown elsewhere for further care.

The area was closed to the public at the time of the incident. Around six feet of snow had fallen in the 36 hours preceding the incident.

The entire mountain and lift operations were closed at noon for the day.
