Firefighters are conducting prescribed burns in the South Park area north of Quincy on Wednesday, with crews planning to treat approximately 152 acres.

Crews are starting near the Ridge and Bear Cub trails and working toward the western edge of the planned treatment area.

Several trailheads and access points are closed during the operation, including the South Park Trailhead, also known as the Barlow Trailhead, the Monument Trailhead and other access points along Chandler Road.

The Spanish Trailhead, Spanish Traverse and Spanish Ridge remain open. The Cascades Trail is also open from the Cascades Trailhead.

Smoke is expected to be visible in Quincy, Indian Valley, along Chandler Road and Oakland Camp Road, and near Highway 70. Officials say they do not expect significant long-term smoke impacts to nearby communities.

Minor, short-term smoke impacts are possible along Chandler Road, Highway 70 and nearby forest roads. Visibility could be reduced at times.

Smoke may settle into lower-lying areas Wednesday evening, including Chandler Road, Quincy, Keddie and communities farther down the canyon. Limited smoke impacts in Indian Valley are also possible.

People sensitive to smoke are encouraged to monitor conditions and take precautions if needed.

Drivers should also expect increased firefighter traffic, primarily along Chandler Road. Officials are asking the public to avoid the road if possible, use alternate routes or travel with extra caution.

Drivers on Highway 70 near the ranger station and Chandler Road should watch for firefighting equipment entering and exiting roadways and prepare for possible slowdowns.

Plumas National Forest personnel and Forest Service firefighters from across the region are helping with the prescribed burning operation.
