A winter storm is on its way to Reno this week. But first, it's going to hit the sierras and Truckee.

One traveler said he's camping with his family, and a lot of the supplies they're bringing for the outdoors also work when you're stuck in a storm.

"You bring, like, firewood, tons of warm clothes, boots, extra pairs of pants and a bunch of cozy sweaters," said Conor Hanson.

While Conor and his family are just passing through, another driver said his family is staying in a nearby cabin for a few days - whether they like it or not.

"We're coming out for four nights, basically going to get snowed in," said Bradley Hansen.

Hansen - no relation to Conor - says he's come prepared with candles, plenty of food, and a full tank of gas. He said when he drove this way a couple years ago, he got stuck at Donner Summit for eight hours.

"That's why we came up tonight. We were trying to time it so we got in before the storm, and we seem to have done that," Hansen said.

Hansen also invested in new snow tires and a car that can better handle winter weather, even if he had to learn that lesson the hard way.

"I was in the cabin on a steep driveway, and i got stuck in basketball shorts, flip flops, you know, I was just running to the store," he said, "and I couldn't get back up, and I had to drive around the block a few times. I had to get out, push my car. Oh, it was horrible."

Conor adds that even if your car can handle the snow, you should be careful on the roads.

"You should put on your chains and like, pay super close attention to people when you're driving," he said.
