Wednesday mornings at the Reno DMV bring a line of people to the building’s front doors – a line that sometimes wraps around the corner.
It’s the one day a week that the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles allows customers to walk-in without scheduling an appointment, but this week is an exception. The Nevada DMV announced that it’s suspending walk-in services in Reno and Clark County due to extreme summer heat.
When Katie Stroup learned the news as she stood in line this morning, her face fell.
“No, oh man, okay, so am I here for no reason?” she asked a 2 News Nevada reporter, adding that she’d driven 45 minutes to get to the DMV.
Others in line had similar reactions, as a loudspeaker outside the building broadcasted the announcement, saying the DMV would not be seeing any customers without appointments.
“I was here thinking it was a walk-in day,” Elba Vazquez said. “I’m going in late to work. I already lost four hours of my shift, pretty much, thinking I could get in without an appointment. … There’s no sign on the door that says that it’s been canceled.”
In a press release, the DMV said it wants to limit the risk of heat exposure.
“Customers continue to line up outside of our Las Vegas offices hours before the doors even open,” said DMV Director Tonya Laney. “Temperatures are soaring above 100 degrees before 8 a.m. We are noticing increasing temperatures in Reno and want to be proactive for our customers there as well.”
A DMV spokesperson told 2 News Nevada that this change will likely last through the summer months.
“As soon as we see those decreasing temperatures, we’ll probably roll back out with the walk-ins,” said Hailey Foster, Nevada DMV public information officer.
The DMV added in the announcement that it still offers some services without an appointment.
Customers can walk-in for moving permits, debt payment, and certain ID card services.
To get an appointment on Wednesdays, customers can book online after 8 p.m. on Tuesday nights. Visit this link to see appointment availability at all Nevada DMV locations.
