A fire broke out around 2 p.m. on Friday and completely destroyed an apartment building near North McCarran Boulevard and West 7th Street. Reno Fire Battalion Chief Roger Mooney says 16 engines responded with 54 firefighters working to take it out.

"There's eight units in this building that are being affected, seven of them were actively being lived in, with 12 displaced individuals," said Mooney.

Chief Mooney says that five ferrets, two cats, and two dogs were rescued, and two dogs unfortunately died in the fire. The building is no longer livable and Red Cross is currently working with all residents to find a new place to live in the meantime.

It is unclear how the fire started and if it started in the sagebrush or the building first. It is currently an ongoing investigation.

With so many recent fires happening, Mooney warns everybody to stay extra cautious of anything that start a fire, "There's just no moisture left in any of these fields and they're just ready to light off, so I think that is our best word of caution is just be aware of the heat and the low humidity and just be smart on how you're using flaming heat."
