Now that the dust has settled from the election, legislative democrats are preparing for the next session, which begins on the first Monday of February. Newly elected assemblywoman Erica Roth tells us Democrats had a strong showing in northern Nevada.
"Democrats won every, almost every, legislative seat that was up in the north. We flipped a Senate seat. We held on in Assembly District 25 and were victorious in both my Assembly District 24 and Assembly District 27," said (D-24) Reno Assemblywoman Erica Roth.
Although legislative democrats performed well, assemblywoman Roth expressed disappointment with the results of the presidential election in Nevada.
While ballot question 6, which protects the right to abortion, passed decisively with 64 percent of the vote, it is clear that some voters supported question 6 but still opted for Donald Trump in the presidential race.
Roth argues that this situation puts the entire nation at risk, as increased regulations against reproductive rights could override state laws.
"It's hard to know that people in this state, we voted to protect the right to abortion in this state. We did not vote to protect that right for people in other states. And because it's gone back to the states, now everyone is at risk," said Roth.Â
President-elect Donald Trump has pledged not to move for a federal abortion ban and has disavowed a conservative think tank report, Project 2025, which calls for more severe restrictions on reproductive rights.
