The Bureau of Land Management will temporarily close portions of the Black Rock Desert playa ahead of the annual Burning Man event, with restrictions beginning July 30 and continuing through October 10.
The temporary closure is intended to protect public resources, improve public safety, and allow Bureau of Land Management law enforcement to support state and local law enforcement.
The closure will take place in two phases. Phase one will close about 10,185 acres, less than 3% of the playa, from July 30 through October 10. Phase two will close about 51,149 acres, or 33% of the playa, from August 24 through September 11.
The remainder of the Black Rock Desert playa will remain open for dispersed recreational use. The East Playa Highway and West Playa Highway will remain open for through traffic only during the closure.
The Black Rock Field Office has posted signs and distributed maps outlining the restrictions. Information is also available at main entry points around the playa, the Winnemucca District Office, the Black Rock Visitor Center, and the Black Rock Field Office website.
