The Carson City School District's Board of Trustees is sponsoring the 23rd Annual 'American Citizen Essay Contest'.Â
The contest has been an annual event since 2020 and began to honor the memory of those lost and the events that took place on September 11, 2021.Â
The Carson City Board of Trustees has established a fund that will be given as a cash award to celebrate the winning students at each grade level: elementary, middle school, and high school.Â
Any Carson City student whether public, charter, private or home-schooled may take part in the contest. Â
The topic of this year's essay is "The Pledge of Allegiance mentions that our nation is indivisible. Considering divisions within our society today, what steps can you take to create unity?"Â
Students can handwrite or type out their essay but it should be no longer than five pages and may be as short as the student desires.Â
The first page of the student's essay must include the student's name (first and last), age, grade, telephone number, teacher's name, and name of their school.Â
All essays will be judged at each grade level on adherence to the topic, originality of thought, and use of the traits of writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions).
Completed essays are due to the Carson City School District at 1402 West King Street no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
The winners for each level up to third place will be announced publicly at the board's Tuesday, November 12 school board meeting.
Each level will receive the following cash award. All first-place winners will be asked to read their essays to the board at the meeting.
- First Place: $100
- Second Place: $50
- Third Place: $30
