Phone scam

The Carson City Sheriff's Office has been made aware of an ongoing phone scam, and advises people to be on the alert.

In the scam, the caller claims to be law enforcement and uses the name of real law enforcement personnel.

The caller then demands payment in exchange for not arresting the person they called, or to prevent filing a warrant.

Callers often demand payment in the form of gift cards, or asking for credit/debit card information.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office would like to remind people of the following:

  • The Carson City Sheriff's Office will not contact people over the phone demanding payment in lieu of arrest.
  • The Carson City Sheriff's Office will not demand payment over the phone for warrants or missing jury duty.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public to stay vigilant against scam telephone calls. Scammers evolve their tactics and different scenarios are frequently reported. If a suspicious call is received, people should hang up and not provide personal information.
