Former Washoe County District Attorney Dick Gammick has died. He was 79.

The Washoe County District Attorney's Office released the following statement on behalf of DA Chris Hicks, regarding the passing of former DA Dick Gammick

“It is with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of Dick Gammick. Dick was a towering figure in our community whose service, leadership, and generosity touched countless lives.

As a tough, no nonsense law enforcement officer and prosecutor, Dick was unwavering in his commitment to public safety and justice. At the same time, he never lost sight of the human side of the work, especially when it came to children and victims of crime. During his 20 years as Washoe County District Attorney, he ensured this community received the protection and service it deserved, and he did so with strength, integrity, and compassion.

I will always be grateful that Dick hired me as a prosecutor over two decades ago. His guidance and leadership shaped not only my career, but the careers of so many who had the privilege to work with him. It was an honor to follow in his footsteps as Washoe County District Attorney.

Dick leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of service and dedication to this community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

And knowing Dick, I can only say this: if there are any crooks in heaven, they better watch out.”

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve also released a statement:

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Dick Gammick. He was a true Reno legend who served his country in the Vietnam War and his community as a respected tough-on-crime District Attorney for nearly two decades. His dedication made our community a safer place and I was honored to call him my friend.
