A single American flag with a long travel history is set to pause in Carson City next week, and the stop comes with a ceremony that ties the capital city to a much larger national journey.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is hosting the Flag Sojourn 250 Ceremony on Tuesday, February 10, at 1 p.m. at the sheriff’s office on 911 E. Musser Street.
The event marks the flag’s visit to Nevada as it continues a planned route through every U.S. state, territory, and overseas military cemetery.
Flag Sojourn 250 is built around one flag and where it goes. The project is designed to carry that flag across the country and beyond as a symbol tied to national unity and service.
Its route includes all U.S. territories and every U.S. military cemetery overseas, before finishing its journey in Washington, D.C., in July.
The effort is led by the National Flag Foundation in partnership with America250’s America Waves program. Other partners include the National Sheriffs’ Association, UPS, and the American Battle Monuments Commission.
The journey began on June 14, 2025, during a ceremony hosted by the Vietnam Veterans of America. From there, the flag was carried across ten countries, visiting all 26 U.S. military cemeteries overseas, along with U.S. territories in the Pacific and Atlantic. It returned to American soil on October 8, 2025.
Now moving state by state, the flag is being carried by sheriffs’ offices nationwide.
Its final stop will be Washington, D.C., where it will be presented to the America250 Committee and raised as part of the lead-up to the nation’s Semi quincentennial on July 4.
People interested in following the flag’s progress can track each leg of the journey through maps, photos, videos, and personal stories shared by the National Flag Foundation.
