Gas prices nationwide are at their highest point since the start of the war with Iran.

On Wednesday, the national average rose five cents since Tuesday to $4.23 per gallon, according to AAA.

Nevada's price has stayed well above that, rising three cents to $5.10. In Reno, drivers are paying six more cents than on Tuesday at $5.31.

Gas prices have also reached their highest point since 2022, according to GasBuddy.

One Reno driver, Cameron Johnson, said, "I used to only put like $40 into [my car]. Now I'm putting like 60 to 65 bucks in it."

Pete Menchetti is driving a band from Washington, D.C., across the country for a tour. He said the rising gas prices are forcing him to rethink where he stops.

"I use an app to find the cheapest gas, and it's still expensive," Menchetti said. "But you know, we do what we can to save."

"I have a hybrid which helps, which gets 33 miles to the gallon, but still," Ginger Hoffman from Reno said. "I'm now paying $100 for a full tank of gas."

Hoffman said she doesn't have that money right now, and she might have to top off her tank further away.

"I'm just going to put 20 in because I'm waiting for my paycheck to come, and then I'll finish," she said. "Or I may go up to USA Parkway or Carson [City]. I haven't decided yet."

Neighbors said they hope the war with Iran ends sooner rather than later, so prices can return to normal.

"I bought groceries the other day, and it was like 70 bucks for like, three bags," Robert Sinclair said. "Plus, the gas prices, it's like, I don't care about whatever's going on over there [in Iran]. When people are struggling to make ends meet and pay for gas, I think that's the most important thing, and it's frustrating."

"I sometimes wonder if the people who are in control of things in Washington truly get how difficult it is for people in northern Nevada. And everyone, let's be real," Hoffman said.

A local petroleum expert says price fluctuations should be expected for a while, as the conflict continues.

"At least over the next 4 to 6 weeks. Really, at this point, it's going to completely come down to if and when the Iranian conflict gets finished up," said Miranda Hoover, Executive Director, Energy and Convenience Association of Nevada.

If you have a gas station you visit frequently, see if they have a rewards program so you can save a few cents on every gallon you pump.

Most gas stations offer a lower price per gallon if you use cash, sometimes as much as 15 cents cheaper due to credit card processing fees.

"Any time that consumers can use cash right now, it may not be a huge chunk of change, of money that they're going to save," Hoover said, "but it is going to be money that they can save."

As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, your lowest price in Reno-Sparks is $4.97 per gallon at the Kwik Serve on Pyramid Way, as well as the Sinclair on Victorian Avenue if you pay with cash.

The lowest price is $4.54 in Carson City at the Country Store.

In Fernley, your best bet is the Quik Stop at $4.55.
