The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) says 'Keep the Holiday Cheer Off Your Gear'! Christmas lights on cars are unsafe, prohibited, and break the law. Light up your home, not the highway.

NHP says with the holiday season in full swing and festive spirits high they want to remind drivers that decorating your car with Christmas lights might brighten your day but could dim the safety of other drivers.

They say that under Nevada State Law lighting on your car is strictly regulated to ensure the safety of others on the road.

NHP says lights on the front of a car must be displayed in amber, and those on the rear must be displayed in red. Decorative lights often violate these standards and can distract other drivers causing confusion and possibly even an accident.

They say according to state law drivers may not attach decorative lighting, including Christmas lights, to their cars as it does not comply with the state's requirements for color, placement, and or function, that holiday lights are not considered legal or safe substitutes for the required standards of law for the two required headlamps.

NHP says while they love the holiday enthusiasm, they want to keep everyone on the Nevada roadways safe.  Drivers are encouraged to spread cheer in ways that don't involve adding further distractions to their cars and driving because a traffic ticket doesn't make for a good stocking stuffer.
