Heatwave

A heat wave coinciding with the start of the school year for some area students is raising concerns across the region, with officials urging precautions as temperatures rise.

In an online post, the National Weather Service Reno said, "Another hot day is in store today, just in time for the new school year! Highs will mainly be in the 90s to 103°F, so be sure to stay hydrated and limit time in the heat!"

A heat advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. Monday through 9 a.m. Wednesday for northeast California, Surprise Valley, and western Nevada.

The advisory warns of a moderate risk of heat-related illness, especially for those sensitive to heat without protective action.

According to the National Weather Service, daytime highs are expected to reach between 95 and 100 degrees, with overnight lows staying warm, ranging from 65 to 72 degrees. The agency recommends avoiding outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. when possible.

Officials encourage the public to drink plenty of water, stay out of the sun, and use air-conditioned spaces to reduce the risk of heat illness. The heat risk level has been categorized as 2 out of 4, which is considered moderate.
