Reno reached temperatures of 102 degrees on Tuesday. With hot weather like that, members of the community found a variety of ways to keep cool in the heat.
At the Washoe County Senior Center, seniors kept cool by playing an indoor game called "beanbag baseball." It's played with the same rules as regular baseball, except it uses a cornhole-style target and no pitcher.
Bev Starr says the beanbag baseball group gets together twice a week to enjoy this inclusive game.
"It's a game that's geared towards seniors and people with disabilities," Starr said. "And we just have a great time. We laugh and yell and scream."
Starr says they play the game every Tuesday and Friday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Instead of running the bases, three chairs are set up behind the toss numbered one through three.
While the main goal is to have a game anyone can play, Starr says it doubles as a chance to escape the summer heat.
"We're not out there sweating in the sun, or running the bases in the sun," Starr said. "We are relaxing in our chairs and just having a good time and laughing and playing."
This game isn't isolated to one room at the senior center. Starr says there's many groups they play with around town.
"There are, like eight teams in the Reno area, and we often play each other in tournaments," she said.
While beanbag baseball is a blast, there's plenty of ways to stay cool outside.
James Menzies says he visits Rock Park to enjoy the Truckee River.
"It's supposed to be 100 and something [degrees] today," he said. "Yeah, I'm going to be by the water for sure."
Menzies says he sticks to the shore, but his dog Pebbles has no problem jumping right in.
Dennis Cook also brought his dog Penelope to the park. She's actually Pebbles's sister.
Rock Park is just one of the spots Cook goes to for the water.
"There's Cottonwood [Park]," Cook said. "Cottonwood has a nice little swimming hole."
