Mondays have a bad reputation, so why not Accentuate the Positive?
A local non-profit is asking the community to do just that.
Truckee Meadows Tomorrow (TMT) hosted Accentuate the Positive, a celebratory brunch honoring positive impacts in our community, on Monday morning at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.
Board President Edward Estipona says the event serves as a break from negativity, if only for a few hours.
"We just wanted something positive to put out in the community," Estipona said, "because we know there's a lot more positive things versus negative things happening."
The goal of TMT is to collect data that can help improve the quality of life and make it readily available. On Monday, they awarded those who used that data to make a positive impact.
"We're really just here to celebrate local nonprofits, local businesses, public-private spaces, everyone gathering to support quality of life here in our region," said Executive Director Erin Hanna-Butros Meyering.
Local organizations honored at the event include Renown Health, the Nevada Women's Fund, and the Northern Nevada Literary Council.
TMT has been around since 1990, and they started hosting Accentuate the Positive in the years that followed. However, they stopped the event in 2009 during the housing market crash.
Estipona says it's about time they brought it back.
"We wanted to revive it, especially right now, given the circumstances of how many things we hear in the news that are negative," he said.
While the brunch was a great way to highlight positive impacts, Meyering says it's only part of what made Monday special.
"We received proclamations from the City of Reno, the City of Sparks, and Washoe County to claim Accentuate the Positive Day today, September 15th," she said.
Meyering says the group will look to make Accentuate the Positive Day recognized every year going forward.
In the meantime, Estipona says, "Instead of focusing on the negative, let's focus on the positive."
