A woman who survived a violent attack by her partner saw justice served as he received the maximum sentence.
52-year-old James Allen was sentenced to 11 years after his convictions for Domestic Battery, Domestic Battery by Strangulation, and Assault Constituting Domestic Violence with the Use of a Deadly Weapon.
Allen was given 2-5 years for Domestic Battery by Strangulation, 2-6 years for Assault Constituting Domestic Violence with the Use of a Deadly Weapon, and 146 days in the county jail with full credit for time served on a Domestic Battery, First Offense misdemeanor.
Authorities say Allen was arrested after the victim’s coworker contacted the Reno Police Department when the woman arrived at work with a black eye, swollen lips, and limited mobility. She reported Allen had strangled her until she blacked out and held a gun to her head, dry-firing it while saying the next time it would be loaded.
Deputy District Attorney Hannah Martinez requested consecutive sentences for all counts, including 24-60 months for strangulation, 180 days in the Washoe County Jail for the misdemeanor, and 28-72 months for the assault with a deadly weapon charge.
The Honorable Egan Walker presided and imposed the sentence.

A man is scheduled to be sentenced in December after being convicted by a jury in a domestic violence case.Â
The Washoe County District Attorney's Office says James Allen was convicted on all three counts: Domestic Battery, Domestic Battery by Strangulation, and Assault Constituting Domestic Violence with the Use of a Deadly Weapon.
Prosecutors say the 51-year-old hit and strangled his 32-year-old partner in October 2024. They say he also put a gun to her head.Â
During an investigation, authorities also learned he broke the woman's arm in three places, gave her black eyes and told her to kill herself.Â
The DA's office says the pair also share a child, whom Allen would threaten to take away from her.
