Worker in data center

NV Energy is responding to a recent article in Fortune magazine claiming it will cut off power to South Lake Tahoe next year to power data centers here.

The article says NV Energy plans to end its contract with Liberty Utilities to supply power to South Lake in May of 2027 in order to free up more power for data centers.

However, NV Energy disputes this, saying in a statement they will provide service to customers in South Lake Tahoe while Liberty secures its own energy supply.

They say their agreement with Liberty was always a temporary one and there will be no disruptions in power.

According to the article, Liberty asked the California Public Utilities Commission to authorize an expedited request for proposals for replacement energy beginning in June of 2027.

NV Energy says they agreed last year to continue providing energy to their customers, until Liberty's transmission access, Greenlink West, is in place.

There'a also concerns over how data centers are playing a role in this.

NV Energy says the decision for Liberty to move to its own power supply is based on agreements and planning that date back more than a decade.

They stress data centers did not influence this decision.

The California Public Utilities Commission also says Liberty and NV Energy will not end their agreement until a new transmission line comes online to give them access to a wider supply of energy.

We've reached out to Liberty Utilities to get their response to the article and have not heard back yet.
