U.S. Navy showcases mixed reality experience at two high schools

For a few hours on Monday, a classroom in Fallon is about to feel a lot bigger.

On Monday, the U.S. Navy will bring its Strike Group mixed reality experience to Churchill County High School, giving students a hands on look at how science, technology, engineering and math connect to Navy careers.

The mobile setup is designed to show what those jobs look like in real time, using immersive scenarios instead of lectures.

The Strike Group uses mixed reality to place students inside Navy missions, letting them see how technology and teamwork intersect across different roles. “From the depths of the sea to the heights of the stars, America’s Navy is the most highly skilled, technologically advanced military force in the world,” said Rear Admiral James P. Waters, Commander, Navy Recruiting Command. “A STEM career in the Navy provides a life changing experience filled with adventure, teamwork, and support, and the Strike Group brings all these aspects to life.”

The experience is built around three interactive challenges.

In All Hands, five players will work together on the flight deck of the USS Gerald R. Ford. Wearing a Meta Quest 3 headset, students will take on different responsibilities, from fueling to flying helicopters to piloting an F 35C Lightning II jet, while learning how each role affects a Navy mission.

Train will focus on the intensity behind Navy SEAL preparation. A SEAL trainer will guide participants through challenges designed to test physical strength, mental fortitude and willpower.

Seek will put students inside a Navy submarine during an Ice Exercise near the North Pole. Working as a team, participants will rely on skills tied to nuclear propulsion, sonar, and navigation as they attempt to break through Arctic sea ice.

In addition to the stop in Fallon, the Navy will showcase the Strike Group at North Valleys High School in Reno later this week.
