Nevada Humane Society

The Nevada Humane Society is offering free and discounted adoptions at their Reno and Carson City locations on Saturday.

The Humane Society's Reno shelter is nearing 80 percent capacity, according to a press release, and they are asking the community to consider adopting a dog to help free up space.

The adoption events on Saturday will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Reno and Carson City.

The Reno campus is located at 2825 Longley Lane, while the Carson City campus is located at 549 Airport Road.

During the event, adoption fees will be waived for dogs who have been in the shelter for more than 14 days, and all others will be available at half price.

On the day of the event, the Salty Paws Ice Cream Truck will be on-site at the Reno Campus offering free doggie treats for newly adopted pets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Nevada Humane Society also encourages people to help in other ways.

  • Fostering provides short-term care to animals in need while easing the burden on the shelter.
  • Monetary gifts, pet food, toys, and supplies all play a vital role in animal care. In 2024, NHS distributed nearly 200,000 pounds of pet food through its Pet Pantry program, helping families keep their pets during temporary challenges.
  • Spaying and neutering pets helps reduce shelter overpopulation. With the support of a $600,000 ARPA-funded grant, NHS has launched a targeted spay/neuter initiative through 2026 to expand access to affordable services.
  • You can also volunteer. Nearly 600 volunteers donated more than 34,000 hours of service in 2024, helping animals heal, socialize, and find permanent homes.
