David Calvert, a well-known photographer in Nevada and a familiar face at Reno Aces games since the team's inception in 2009, has been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
The aggressive form of blood cancer attacks the bone marrow and weakens the immune system, according to his loved ones.
Calvert’s diagnosis has led to an outpouring of support from across the community. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with expenses as he begins treatment and navigates an uncertain financial future.
“On July 30, my friend and longtime reporting partner, David Calvert, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, an aggressive blood cancer that attacks the bone marrow and weakens the immune system,” reads the message on the GoFundMe fundraiser page. “This diagnosis has upended David's life overnight.”
According to the GoFundMe page, Calvert is known throughout Nevada for his decades of work documenting life across the state. His photography has supported organizations such as the University of Nevada, Reno, Renown Children’s Hospital, Communities in Schools, Donor Network West, and The Reno Philharmonic.
His images have also captured events like the Bishop Mule Days Celebration in Bishop, California, and the Nevada Legislature, where he is one of the few photojournalists to consistently document proceedings.
“If you've ever been to a Reno Aces game, you probably recognize David,” the fundraiser states. “Baseball was his first love, and it's been a dream realized to be the club's team photographer since its inception in 2009.”
In addition to his photography, Calvert is an adjunct instructor at the Reynolds School of Journalism at UNR, where he has mentored hundreds of students.
He was recently recognized for his volunteer work with the National Press Photographers Association, an organization he has supported for more than 20 years.
“David is kind and generous, a gifted photographer, storyteller, and mentor,” the GoFundMe page continues. “His sharp eye and wit are unforgettable to everyone who's had the privilege of knowing or working with him.”
According to the fundraiser, Calvert’s treatment will likely prevent him from working for several months, potentially through the end of the year or longer.
Compounding the situation, his partner, Marissa, was recently laid off from her public health job due to federal budget cuts.
“And the timing couldn't be worse,” the campaign states. “The financial uncertainty is overwhelming.”
The fundraiser seeks to help Calvert and his partner remain in their home, care for their three dogs, and manage day-to-day needs during treatment.
Organizers are encouraging those who have worked with Calvert or been impacted by his photography and teaching to contribute.
“If you've ever worked with David, laughed at his jokes, learned from him, or been moved by his storytelling, please consider giving,” the page reads. “Your support will make a meaningful difference in this fight.”
You can make donations online at David's GoFundMe page. Organizers plan to post future updates as Calvert undergoes treatment.
