A quiet moment under the Reno Arch will bring people together tonight for something that goes beyond ceremony.
The Reno Police Department is inviting the community to gather Monday at 7 p.m. beneath the arch for the 16th Annual “Turn the Arch Blue” ceremony, honoring law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.
The event will include a reading of the names of fallen officers, including those with ties to the Reno area. This year’s ceremony will also recognize Deputy James Hugh James Gallagher Sr. of the Storey County Sheriff’s Office. His family is expected to take part in the ceremonial lighting of the arch. His end of watch was April 30, 1948.
As the arch is illuminated in blue, the color is meant to represent peace, remembrance, and continued support from the community.
“Turning the Arch blue is a powerful tribute to the officers who gave their lives in the line of duty,” said Reno Police Acting Chief Corey Solferino. “It is a moment for our community to stand together to honor their sacrifice, support their families, and reaffirm our enduring commitment to those who serve and protect.”
Uniformed officers, their families, and members of the public are encouraged to attend. People are also invited to display blue lights at their homes and businesses throughout May as a sign of support.
