The Reno Fire Department has a few tips on how to safely fry a turkey this holiday season.
Reno Fire Marshal John Beck says that setting up a turkey fryer is one of the most important parts of the process.
He suggests setting up the fryer away from structures to avoid a fire and picking an oil like canola oil that is less likely to overheat.
Beck also says anyone planning on frying their turkey should make sure that it is properly prepared before dropping it in oil. That includes making sure the bird is completely thawed out as putting frozen turkeys in hot oil can cause them to explode.
Beck also says that keeping children and pets away from turkey fryers can help reduce the chance of cooking injuries.
