Every year around St. Patrick’s Day, heads are shaved, and money is raised in the name of childhood cancer research.

The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation is hosting its 21st annual Shave for the Brave event in partnership with the St. Baldrick's Foundation. The event is set for Friday, March 13, at the Reno Ballroom.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m., and the kick-off starts at 6 p.m. at the Reno Ballroom, 401 N. Center St., Reno.

Each year, the nonprofit asks the community to “Shave for the Brave” and go bald in support of childhood cancer research. Since 2006, NNCCF has raised more than $3.8 million and shaved 5,107 heads to fund critical research. This year, the goal is to raise $200,000 to continue the fight against pediatric cancer.

During the event, shavees raise money by collecting pledges from family members and friends. People can fundraise individually or join a team. Barbers, who are certified cosmetologists volunteering their time, shave participants’ heads until all the hair is gone. Men, women, and children are all welcome to take part.

One out of 263 children in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20. More children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other childhood disease combined.

NNCCF assists an average of 150 local families each year and has provided more than $10 million in financial and emotional assistance in northern Nevada. The organization is funded through local grassroots efforts and does not receive federal or state funding.

The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation is the only nonprofit in the region solely dedicated to helping local children and their families affected by childhood cancer. Its programs include the Family Assistance Fund, Inspire Scholarship program, Hope for the Holidays program, and emotional support through No More Chemo celebrations and family activities.
