The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help after two attempted home invasions that investigators believe may be connected to a social media challenge.
The first incident happened September 5 at around 2 a.m. when a suspect kicked in the front door of a home. The elderly homeowner did not contact deputies until the next morning after discovering the damage. Investigators determined that the suspect did not enter the home and no property was reported missing.
The second incident happened September 7 around 2:25 a.m. Ring camera footage shows the suspect kicking the front door and running into it with his shoulder.
The suspect then ran into the street, where another person was waiting. Both then ran away. The sheriff's office believes the suspects may be teens.
Sheriff Dan Coverly believes the incidents may be part of a social media challenge, "I would caution anyone who believes this type of behavior is harmless or simply a prank. Attempting to force entry into someone’s home could easily be mistaken for a burglary or home invasion and may result in a homeowner responding with force to protect themselves and their family.”
