A collaboration of state and county leaders have gathered school supplies for a local community.
Nevada State Senator Angie Taylor, Assemblymember Heather Goulding and Washoe County Commissioner Mariluz Garcia spent a large part of July collecting donations of school supplies.
Then today, during a giveaway event at Scoleri's, the leaders handed out the supplies to school students in the Sun Valley.
The team chose to hand the supplies out to some of the 20,000 students living in Sun Valley, because many families there face economic challenges.
"When we put pencils, markers, notebooks, etc. in a child's hands, we aren't just giving school supplies," said Senator Taylor, "We are giving them the tools they need to reach their full potential. That's why I'm so excited about this giveaway!"
Students attending Sun Valley Elementary, Lois Allen Elementary, Esther Bennett Elementary, Virginia Palmer Elementary and Desert Skies Middle School were able to stop by the event and gather free school supplies on a first-come, first-served basis.
"We are grateful to community partners for their generous donations to kids in Sun Valley. These supplies will help students start the school year ready for success," said Asm. Goulding.
