The Andelin Family Farm started in 1980 and became open to the public 15 years ago.
The owners of the farm refer to it as 'agri-tourism'.
They've been working with the City of Sparks to grow their operation. However, Cameron Andelin, the Owner and Operator of Andelin Family Farm, says there were a few social media posts asking people to sign a petition to help keep the farm open while rezoning is in effect for the City of Sparks.
The Farm has been working closely with the city and they appreciate the support from the community, but the farm as of right now is set to stay open.
"The direction those comments and posts went, they were misinterpreted that we were in an emergency right now," said Cameron Andelin. "But we appreciate all the support, and we appreciate that people want us to stay a farm."
He also says the farm is considered a gemstone in the Sparks area. He says the goal is, no matter how many houses get developed they will always be a farm for the community to enjoy.
"We've been working with city staff for several years and we consider them partners and we work together to write an amend some codes that will allow the farm to flourish into the far future," he said.
Eventually they want to build a farm store to sell their produce year-round. He says if you want to support them, coming to their events is the best way to do so.Â
Thursday marked the first day of their Sunflower Festival lasting until August 23rd. They say a lot of work goes into getting the flowers ready to pick.
Natalie Andelin, the Owner of Andelin Family Farm explains the process.
"A lot of planting, a lot of care." She said. "We have a summer weeding crew that was out here because there's a lot of weeding, the water and irrigation that goes into stuff grow correctly and making our paths and putting out some really fun props for photos ops."
They have the sunflower field and the farm store open weekdays, but on the weekends additional activities will be open such as hayrides and a chance to check out their animals.
"There is something magical about being here," said Natalie Andelin. "A couple years ago when we first started, I remember coming out and thinking all of Reno needs to come out and experience this, not so much for the business aspect but for the experience. It's just amazing."
