Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue hosted the first fall Green Waste Collection event.

This is the first of eleven for the season, and they say they want people to understand the importance of defensible space around your home.

"The more defensible space—that clear zone around your property that you have—really increases your chance of reduction of property damage against a wildfire, and it goes a long way in supporting our firefighters," said Adam Mayberry, Communications Officer for Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue.

People were able to come to the Nevada Division Forestry location in Washoe Valley and quickly drop off any unwanted green waste or dry vegetation.

Some residents made four or five runs today, and dropping off the waste was very quick and efficient.

Although you can make as many runs as you want, there are some things you can't dump such as dirt, grass clippings, trash, root balls, and manufactured lumber.

Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue wants to encourage people to take defensible space seriously and remember that the fire risk is still real.

There is another collection day on Sunday at the Nevada Division Forestry location in Washoe Valley and the address is 885 Eastlake Boulevard.

The collection will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
