Record Setting Heat

A stretch of weather that feels more like early June than mid-March is settling over the region this week, and forecasters say it could rewrite the record books before it is over.

The National Weather Service says unseasonably strong high pressure building across the West will bring several days of unusually warm temperatures across western Nevada. Daytime highs are expected to climb into the 70s and 80s Monday through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, the Western Nevada valleys could see the first 80-degree day of 2026 next week, something that normally does not happen until late April.

If temperatures climb high enough, Reno could also set a new all-time warmest day for March if readings at Reno-Tahoe International Airport exceed 83 degrees. The current record for the warmest March day in Reno was set on March 31, 1966.

Forecasters say there is also a chance the city could see three consecutive days of 80 degree temperatures in March for the first time, along with new daily record high temperatures.

Weather officials say the heat will arrive quickly.

"This week is predicted to be summer hot. Hydrate with salt and electrolytes, and check your car's AC before hitting the road," the California Highway Patrol said in a public message about the incoming heat.

The National Weather Service also urged people to plan for the warmer conditions.

"Strong high pressure will make this week feel more like early June than mid-March, with record-breaking temperatures likely. Be sure to stay hydrated and avoid area waterways, which will be running fast and cold!”

Even as temperatures warm, rivers and streams fed by mountain snowmelt will remain cold and fast-moving, which can be dangerous for people trying to cool off.

Forecasters recommend drinking plenty of water, wearing light colored clothing, and avoiding cold, fast-running waterways.

The warm stretch begins Monday with sunny skies and a high near 75. Temperatures are expected to climb to around 81 on Tuesday and 83 on Wednesday, before reaching about 84 on Thursday and Friday. Conditions remain mostly sunny through the week with overnight lows generally in the upper 40s and low 50s.

Temperatures are expected to ease slightly heading into the weekend, with highs near 79 Saturday and around 73 Sunday.
