The community came together today in a big way to help give a Vietnam veteran in Panther Valley a home makeover.

The veteran originally came to the attention of Adult Protective Services in Reno after he was ill-served by caretakers and left with a mobile home that was trashed, with his furniture taken.

Family Counseling Service in Reno, which receives funding from the Family Violence Prevention and Service Act, took action - with staffers Liz Estes and Virginia Green determined to improve the veteran's situation.

Many different agencies and volunteers came through to help the man, including Altrusa International, the Elk's Lodge's Veterans Services Committee, I Got You Reno and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 989.

The groups have collected enough manpower and resources to restock the man's fridge and give his home a deep cleaning. In addition, his home will receive needed repairs to the roof and wheelchair ramp, and even plumbing work.

"This has turned into a community project. It's no longer a family counseling service project... it is a Reno, Nevada project. And all the different veterans that just, you know; you can tell veterans take care of one another," said Virginia Green, Case Manager at Counseling Service of Northern Nevada.
