When you're enjoying the outdoors, leave your valuables at home!

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to residents to keep valuables at home when they are enjoying the outdoors due to a worrying trend of car burglaries at several of our local parks and trailheads during the month of February.

In a number of the incidents, suspects would rummage inside parked cars for items they thought might be valuable.

After checking if the car was unlocked, suspects would just open the door and take whatever was inside.

WCSO says they also saw a rise in window-breaking burglaries at parks and trailheads in February.

They say all of the cases had one thing in common: a crime of opportunity was committed because objects were left in plain sight.

If you really must carry valuables while enjoying the outdoors, the Sheriff's Office warns folks to hide them or risk losing them.

Call non-emergency dispatch at (775) 785-WCSO (9276) if you are the victim of one of these crimes, and stay with your car until deputies arrive.

If your debit or credit cards have been taken, cancel them right away and notify deputies of any fraudulent activity.
