Wildfire risk Insurance laws forum

State and local leaders are opening the floor for a conversation many homes have been waiting to have: how wildfire risk is reshaping homeowners' insurance in Washoe County.

Washoe County and the Nevada Division of Insurance are hosting a community meeting focused on recent changes to state law that affect how insurance companies assess wildfire risk.

Those changes could influence whether coverage is available, what it includes, and how much it costs for some homes.

During the 2025 Nevada Legislative Session, lawmakers passed measures that set new rules for how insurers may evaluate wildfire exposure.

Nevada Insurance Commissioner Ned Gaines is scheduled to walk through what the law does, how insurers may apply it, and what options and resources are available to homeowners in fire-prone areas of the county.

After that overview, people from the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and Washoe County Emergency Management will talk about wildfire preparedness and ways homes can reduce risk.

“Wildfire happens frequently in our area, and every resident should understand the threat and how they can help protect themselves and their family,” Emergency Manager Kelly Echeverria said. “We are proud to partner with the State of Nevada to provide this important forum for education and dialogue with residents.”

The meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. on February 24 at the Washoe County Administration Complex, 1001 E. 9th Street, Building A, in the Commission Chambers.

Homeowners are encouraged to bring questions and speak directly with state and county experts about prevention, suppression, and insurance issues tied to wildfire.

People who cannot attend in person can watch live on Zoom, and a recording will be posted the next morning on the Washoe County YouTube Channel.
