President Donald Trump's tariffs are turning factory workers against his Republican Party over fears the import taxes could lead to fewer jobs instead of the manufacturing renaissance he promised. Once solid Republican races are now up for grabs next month in Iowa, Michigan, Pennsylvania and other places that have lost factory jobs. Only 3 in 10 U.S. adults approve of Trump’s handling of trade negotiations, according to an AP-NORC poll from September. One longtime worker at a Michigan clockmaker that shut down in the wake of Trump's tariffs says "it was like taking a knife to the back.”
