The International Criminal Court has criticized new U.S. sanctions on its senior staff as a “flagrant attack” on its independence. The U.S. State Department announced sanctions Tuesday against ICC president Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye, freezing their assets in U.S. jurisdictions. The Trump administration accuses the ICC of overstepping its mandate by investigating officials from non-member countries like the U.S. and Israel. Human Rights Watch condemned the sanctions Wednesday as an attempt to shield officials from justice. Japan also criticizes the sanctions, affirming its support for the ICC's efforts to uphold international law.
