Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has declared a state of emergency in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The decision comes ahead of a planned march on Islamabad by supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Zardari acted on the recommendation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Cabinet. The province is now under the authority of the governor, representing the federal government. Sharif’s office accused the provincial government of disengaging from the fight against terrorism. The move follows a surge in attacks by the Pakistani Taliban and ongoing tensions with Afghanistan's Taliban government.
