A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes Panama, shaking buildings as far as the capital and prompting evacuations. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the quake hit Friday morning near Pitaloza Arriba, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Tremors were felt in Panama City, where buildings shook and people evacuated into the streets. Aftershocks continued shortly after the quake. The National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for the coasts of Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Omar Smith of the National Civil Protection Service urged calm, noting damage was concentrated in the central provinces.
