New White House press secretary Katie Zacharia has faced reporters for the first time for a very brief turn at the lectern. She took a handful of questions Tuesday before abruptly wrapping it up. Zacharia, a conservative commentator who most recently worked for President Donald Trump’s social media company, was named to the job on Friday. She succeeded Karoline Leavitt, who left in August and is taking a job with Fox News Channel. Zacharia did make some big news: she said Trump had asked for the resignation of Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, after reports alleging Guilfoyle engaged in improper and possibly illegal conduct.
The new press secretary for Donald Trump’s White House stepped to the podium. The eyes of a packed room of journalists — and many in their audiences — were upon her. Like her predecessor, she smiled broadly at the sea of faces both probing and friendly. With that, Katie Zacharia went live and became the official voice of the most powerful person in the world. Fourteen minutes and just three questioners later, she was done. It was clear that the former commentator accomplished at least one thing: She put the “brief” back in briefing.
