Floods caused by a glacial collapse kill at least 160 people on Nepal-China border, hundreds missing
Flash floods have killed at least 160 people and left hundreds missing in a border area of Nepal and China. Experts determined a glacial collapse caused the disaster in the warming Himalayan region. Nepalese police report 157 dead, while China’s state broadcaster reports at least three dead there and over 260 missing. Drone footage shows roads destroyed and buildings buried. At least 400 people were missing in Nepal. Many were on a pilgrimage to a sacred Hindu site. India, the U.S., Australia, Britain and Canada reported their citizens were missing. U.S. seismologists say the glacial collapse measured a magnitude of 5.2 and sent debris flowing downstream with catastrophic impact. Nepalese climate experts said one river rose 27 feet in half an hour.
Rescue teams and military helicopters are searching for hundreds of missing people after flash floods on the Nepal-China border. The torrent of water and mud several stories high swept through communities Wednesday after rock and a glacier collapsed in the Himalayan region. Videos showed people running ahead of the floodwaters that washed out buildings and bridges. More than 390 people were killed and more than 1,400 are missing, including hundreds of foreigners and pilgrims. Hundreds of others have been displaced across the Himalayan region. The steep slopes and lush valleys below the Himalayan mountain range are especially vulnerable to flooding and landslides.
