White House aide: Trump did not call for attacks on US cities but explained how he's preventing them
The White House is clarifying Donald Trump’s comments at a Monday night rally, explaining that the president was not insinuating that he wanted Iran to attack U.S. cities but instead wants to prevent Tehran from having that capability. Trump’s communications director Steven Cheung said on social media Tuesday that the president’s comments have been misrepresented. Trump was discussing gas prices and mused about Iran attacking Los Angeles or San Diego, adding that it's “a small price to pay.” Cheung said it was clear the president was not calling for an attack but explaining that the war is to prevent one. California Gov. Gavin Newsom seized on the remarks and accused Trump of endorsing attacks on U.S. soil.
