A panel of federal judges is considering Louisiana's assertion that mifepristone, a key drug in the most common abortion method in the U.S., should not be dispensed anywhere but a medical facility. The case argued Wednesday before the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is one of three making its way through the courts. Even if the appeals panel agrees, the policy won't change right away. That's because the U.S. Supreme Court has already said the current rules will remain in effect while the case is resolved. Abortion pills have been the center of legal fights since the top court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.
