Donut Lassie

Friday, June 7, is National Donut Day.

The Salvation Army is celebrating by honoring veterans and law enforcement officers in our community.

This year, the Salvation Army delivered donuts to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, Veterans Guest House and the Northern Nevada Veterans Home.

National Donut Day dates back to World War I, when Salvation Army volunteers known as "Donut Lassies" would travel overseas to provide support and supplies, including donuts, to the troops.

The Donut Lassies are credited with donuts rising in popularity after the troops returned home from war.

The Salvation Army in Chicago celebrated the first National Donut Day in 1938.
